They act as regulators, recyclers, and even healers of toxic overloads. To reclaim parasite is to see beyond the binary of good and evil, and to recognize their necessary and beneficial role in the web of life.

The word parasite comes from the Greek para (“beside”) and sitos (“food”). In its earliest use, it described a companion at the table, someone who ate alongside another, not an enemy, but a dependent. Their presence tells us something about the terrain: what is stuck, what is toxic, what is ready to be recycled. What we have come to call “parasites” deserves the same reevaluation we have already given to the flora of our inner terrain. They are reminders that dependency, recycling, and even discomfort have roles in the great cycle of life. Reclaiming the word parasite restores its ecological dignity. It reminds us that life is not a war of enemies but an intricate balance in which every participant has a role. The language of “anti-” is not neutral. It reinforces a worldview of permanent battle, where survival depends on annihilating what we do not understand. This mindset has become profitable, fueling industries of pharmaceuticals, cleanses, and chemical interventions and has even sunk its roots into the natural medicine world, which has created its own versions of “parasite-ridding” regimens.
Yet the truth remains: life does not thrive by fighting itself. Where the “anti-” worldview fosters fear and dependence, a terrain-based vocabulary cultivates trust and cooperation. The terrain model offers a different language. Instead of anti-, it speaks in terms of with, through, and alongside. Microbes are companions. Parasites are regulators. To reclaim parasite is not only to restore its ecological role, but also to step outside of a destructive linguistic trap. Just as we reclaimed terrain as a living, vibrant teacher of our existence, we can reclaim parasite as a necessary custodian.
